Undergraduate Admissions Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is a portfolio required for admission?
Answer: No, many high schools do not teach art classes and our classes provide the art experience needed to be a successful designer.
Q: I am in high school; what classes should I take to best prepare for majoring in Environmental Design?
Answer: Advanced placement courses in English, math, science, and social studies are the best preparatory courses. These classes show dedication to one’s learning and are the best preparation for taking the SAT exam. Art and architecture classes are great and might give you an idea of what to expect, but they are not essential.
Q: What is the foreign language requirement?
Answer: As part of the minimum academic preparation standards (MAPS), if you do not have the minimum 2 units upon entering the College, you must take 2 semesters (6 credit hours) of a foreign language. These credits are in addition to those normally required for graduation.
If you are a high school student trying to decide on a foreign language, we recommend Spanish or Italian. Many of our study abroad opportunities travel through Italy due to the rich tradition of design excellence there.
Q: I am already a University of Colorado student, and I’d like to transfer into the College of Architecture and Planning. What is the process for acceptance?
Answer: We refer to UC undergraduate students wishing to transfer into the College of Architecture and Planning as “intrauniversity transfers.” Applications are required and available in the College of Architecture and Planning Admissions Office in the ENVD Building on the Boulder campus.
