Academic Qualifications

What do we look for?

Since you are applying as an undergraduate student to the University of Colorado at Boulder, you will need to meet the standard undergraduate admissions standards (see below).

However, to be accepted into the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), you should have a strong overall high school academic background, including four years of English and at least three years of math, natural science (including physics and/or biology), and social science.  Extra course work in math, social studies, and the humanities is also recommended.

Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS)

If you graduated from high school in 1988 or later, you are required to meet certain minimum academic preparation standards (MAPS). If you are admitted with MAPS deficiencies, you are required to complete at least one MAPS course each term.

CAP has adopted the following entrance standards (One unit equals one year of high school study or one semester of college course work, for a total of 16 units):

  • English: 4 units
  • Mathematics: 3 units
  • Natural Science: 3 units (includes physics and/or biology)
  • Social Science: 3 units
  • Foreign Language: 2 units
  • Academic Electives: 1 unit

Academic Qualifications

Visit the Boulder website for a breakdown of the average academic qualifications of the fall freshman class at Boulder in terms of high school GPA, rank in class, and college entrance test score averages. Use the chart to compare your academic standing and test scores to those of the freshman class.

*Please note - there are no minimum GPA, rank, or test score requirements.

You will be considered on an individual basis relative to a prediction of academic success you will have in CAP. As the only pre-professional architecture and related studies program in the state, CAP has more qualified freshman applicants than there are openings, and only students with the highest qualifications are selected.

If you apply to and are not selected for admission to architecture and planning you will automatically be considered for admission to the College of Arts and Sciences.

If your records reflect nontraditional grading systems, unusual criteria, no rank-in-class information, or high school equivalency through the GED, you will receive careful consideration and are encouraged to apply.
