Certificate in Systems Engineering

  • Systems Engineering: Principles and Practice (5301)
  • Systems Engineering: Planning and Management (5302)
  • Systems Engineering: Special Topics (5303)

Program Description

In this certificate program, students learn of Systems Engineering by following the life cycle of complex engineering systems. Upon completing the core courses a student earns a Certificate in Systems Engineering. The graduate-level credit hours count toward any of the College’s Master’s degree programs as electives.

The series is co-developed by senior systems engineers at Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Sun Microsystems, and professional educators at the University of Colorado Denver.

Background

Systems Engineering is a vital expertise in many industrial sectors: aerospace, energy and power, information technology, telecommunications, medical and healthcare, and civil infrastructures (transportation, water supply and wastewater, and environmental and urban facilities). Systems Engineers provide necessary leadership to engineers who are working on subsystems, integrating specialty groups into a team effort, and forming a structured development process proceeding from concept to detailed engineering, from production to systems operation.

Key tasks for Systems Engineers are (1) helping customers define requirements, (2) developing overall systems concepts, (3) integrating results from parts into a whole, and (4) managing risks and costs. Systems Engineers consider both business and technical issues related to the solution systems under development.

Prerequisites

The program is appropriate for individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in any of the various fields of engineering and/or related fields who are or want to be employed in systems-oriented domains.

Instructors

Industry Professionals and educators at the University of Colorado Denver team teach the Systems Engineering Courses.
