Background:
Adam Atherly, PhD from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University was recently appointed to head the new Health Systems, Management & Policy department within the Colorado School of Public Health. As chair, Dr. Atherly will oversee department development including hiring new associate and assistant ranked faculty in the area of health service research.
Dr. Atherly’s research targets health economics, with an emphasis on the economics of ageing and consumer decisions regarding health plan choice. Much of his research focuses on the Medicare program, including studies on the design of the new Medicare “Part D” program, choice of secondary insurance, and the Medicare Advantage managed care system. Dr. Atherly also recently completed an evaluation of the Medicare “Health Insurance Flexibility and Accountability Act “HIFA” expansion funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Dr. Atherly enters the role on a part time basis and will assume a full appointment within the school this summer. Currently he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Emory, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Economics. Dr. Atherly is also a visiting associate professor in the College of Health Sciences at American University of Armenia and was previously an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Systems Management at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Atherly received his PhD in Health Services Research, Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota and a MA in economics from the University of Washington.
