Colorado SPH Celebrates Inaugural Convocation Ceremony
(May 26, 2009) - It was a whirlwind year at the Colorado School of Public Health and a year of many firsts, including the first school of public health convocation.
This past Friday, graduates, faculty and friends gathered at the Anschutz Medical Campus for the inaugural Colorado School of Public Health convocation ceremony to recognize graduating public health students from UC Denver and UNC. Those that walked represented nearly 90 students who graduated over the course of the 2008-2009 academic year. The ceremony also recognized award recipients and the School’s 14 Delta Omega Inductees.
Ceremony attendees were addressed by Founding Dean Richard Hamman, who highlighted the necessity of the public health profession given the recent H1N1A influenza virus and the rise of obesity and its related diseases. Both topics pointed to the importance the School’s graduates would play in addressing the health issues facing our national and international communities.
Before the close of the ceremony, graduates were presented with a gift from the School’s faculty and staff. Upon the nomination of student council leaders, the School presented the graduates with young trees to plant in their communities. The trees symbolize the individual commitment of each graduate to public health. Like the tree, their profession will grow to provide protection and promote health to those they surround. The School intends to incorporate the trees into an annual convocation tradition, either as individual gifts or as part of a community planting initiative.
