Welcome to the School of Public Affairs and the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice program!  On this page you'll find announcements on advising, program and graduation requirements.  At minimum, please visit this page each registration period.

FALL 2009 ANNOUNCEMENTS!!

  1. GRADUATING SENIORS: Students intending to graduate must complete the online Intent to Graduate Application between the first day of registration for the term and September 2.  This application also has information about diplomas. Students will not be officially certified to graduate until a final audit of the student's record has been completed approximately six weeks after the end of the term. After students have been certified to graduate, they must reapply to return to the Downtown Campus.  Intent to Graduate Application: https://admin.cudenver.edu/reg.
  2. Experiential Learning Scholarship Opportunity: SPA will be awarding Experiential Learning Scholarships to BACJ students for the spring 2010 semester. The student must be actively engaged in an experiential learning project related to their studies. Examples of experiential learning projects include: participation in the C J student groups, volunteer work, internship activity, active participation in criminal justice co-curricular events, etc. Students must be enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours at UCD for the duration of the award. For consideration, students must submit: SPA Scholarship Application (available online or through SPA Office), Typed 1-2 page double spaced essay describing the experiential learning projects or activities, and Student Aid Report (if FAFSA is on file with Financial Aid). Preferred application deadline is October 15, 2009. Final deadline is December 1, 2009.
  3. Experiential Learning Opportunities: SPA will be hosting/offering several events in the Fall 2009:
    1. Guest Speaker, Art Winstanley, October 1st, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM.  Mr. Winstanely was the first police officer arrested in the Denver Police scandal in the early 1960s. Art is the author of “Burglars in Blue,” a memoir recanting his experience as part of the Denver Police scandal and serving time as an ex-police officer.  He will share his story and answer questions on the dangers and temptations of being a sworn police officer.     2. Death Investigations Cadaver Workshop in partnership with Exempla Medical:  Saturday, October 24, 9am - 2pm.  RSVP with Brendan Hardy by Monday October 19 (Only 20 Seats Available!) Lab Fee: $40 per student paid by money order made out to Exempla EMS.

      Ms. Peeples is with the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition and will be speaking on recent criminal justice policies.  This is a critical time for Colorado citizens to learn and discuss the effects of our state’s budget cuts on our criminal justice system.  Governor Ritter’s budget plans could have a significant impact our state’s probation and parole policies, addiction and rehab counseling services, and parolee vocation training – all of which in turn could impact Colorado recidivism rates.  Please join Carol Peeples and the School of Public Affairs in engaging in this enlightening and times relevant dialogue.

      SPA is honored to host Chief Counsel Corina Almeida on Thursday November, 12. Ms. Almeida serves as Chief Counsel for the Denver Area of Responsibility of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the Department of Homeland Security. In her capacity as Chief Counsel, Ms. Almeida serves as the principal legal advisor and consultant to the ICE Special Agent in Charge and ICE Field Office Directors in all legal matters relating to ICE activities in five states. Additionally, she directs and supervises the work and prosecution efforts of all ICE attorneys assigned to the Denver Area of Responsibility. Ms Almeida will be providing an overview and answering questions on the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration Customs Enforcement, and the DHS Office of Principal Legal Advisor.

      The Denver Office, Department of Homeland Security has hired two School of Public Affairs BACJ students in the last year! Please join us in showing support for the DHS and furthering the SPA-DHS partnership.

    5. Guest Lectures will be announced online and via email throughout the semester.
    6. Department of Federal Corrections will be coming in late fall semester or early spring semester.
