ROY MONTOYA

Roy Montoya is currently a CCD student that has been involved with DTI for two semesters and avidly participates in our provided learning communities. Montoya reports that learning communities provide a great learning experience for him and that they help him stay on track and get better grades in his classes. As a result, his GPA remains sky-high! Additionally, Roy was able to test out of reading by using the tutors at DTI. Way to go!

"DTI is home; a place that I can relax and talk to friends but at the same time, it is a place that I can get quick advice," says Montoya. Roy also reports that thanks to DTI, he never had to go to the CCD admissions enrollment office because his financial aid forms, tutoring, and academic planning were all completed with the Denver Transfer Initiative. Most importantly, Roy believes that everyone on the DTI staff is friendly, helpful, and eager to answer any questions he has. Congratulations, Roy!

LAURA ESCARCEGA

The staff at the Denver Transfer Initiative would like to congratulate Laura Escarcega for earning the spotlight for DTI’s student of the month! Laura is a sophomore at the Community college of Denver and will transfer to UCD in the fall of 2008. She is planning on majoring in Business. In February of 2008, Laura was awarded the Regents Scholarship from UCD. The scholarship will provide $1,000 per semester for one whole year! Wow!

Laura has been with the Denver Transfer Initiative for a year now and she has been very pleased with the program. Without DTI, (especially Danny Sandoval, Koreena Montoya, and Anna Marie Jones) she says that she would have had no clue on the steps she would need to take to transfer to UCD.

In the future, Laura plans to finish her bachelor’s degree at UCD and upon graduation she would like to go back to Mexico and travel the country. Her main reason for doing this is to have time for herself before she gets too busy with her career. Congratulations, Laura! You’re an awesome example of success!

JOSE SALAS/AGUIRRE

Congratulations to Jose Salas/Aguirre for earning the spotlight in DTI’s student of the month section! Jose is majoring in Business Marketing and Administration and is planning on transferring to UCD within the next few semesters. Because he has an adoration for music production, Salas/Aguirre may change his current major to accommodate his music passion, but is still unsure. In regard to DTI, Jose states that being a part of this program has gotten him off the streets, motivated him to pursue his opportunity of a higher education, and has pushed him to be the absolute best he can be. Way to go!

Besides his academic success, we would also like to highlight Jose’s artistic abilities. He has created several pieces for the offices of our case managers, all of which tell a distinct story about Salas/Aguirre’s past, present, and future. Check out Jose’s amazing abilities on our website at our MySpace page.

BAHADOR RIAZATI

The Denver Transfer Initiative would like to congratulate Bahador Riazati for earning the student of the month in our Student Spotlight section. Bahador is a freshman at the Community College of Denver and is planning to major in Theoretical Science and Physics at UCD.  Growing up, Bahador faced many challenges and struggles. At age 11, he emigrated from Iran to the US and, as a result of his faith, he would not be allowed back to his homeland once he moved. However, with the help of a positive attitude to see him through this challenge, he earned his GED and enrolled in classes at the Community College of Denver.

Bahador currently works at Berlitz, where he teaches the language of Farsi. He has been with DTI for two months and has been pleased with the program. He states that Vicki Karst has helped him to plan his academic semester according to his major. DTI also provided him with a tutor when he needed one, especially to enhance his math skills.

In his free time, Bahador loves to explore nature, especially in the mountains. In the future, Bahador plans to open his own car company and conduct research in science and physics.
