The Denver Transfer Initiative (DTI) in collaboration with the Center for Faculty Development at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) and the Teaching and Learning Center at the Community College of Denver (CCD), provides training opportunities through Faculty Academies for full-time and adjunct faculty from CCD and UCD. These Faculty Academies aim to teach techniques and technologies that address diversity accepting teaching methods incorporating diverse learning styles to assist faculty in creating an inclusive classroom atmosphere fostering student success.
This Fall 30 CCD/UCD faculty attended an all day Faculty Academy on September 21, 2007. The Faculty Academy was taught by guest lecturer, Raymond Wlodkowski, Ph.D. Dr. Wlodkowski taught faculty: to use a motivational framework that is responsive to cultural differences for considering and planning learning activities; to effectively and quickly build a learning community in their courses and classes; to use the previous experience and backgrounds of their students to make learning more relevant and authentic; to use feedback and other motivational strategies that are evidence based for increasing the motivation, perseverance and learning among their students. Also in this workshop, Dr Wlodkowski addressed the effects of intergenerational differences and how to use them for mutual benefit to faculty and students.

The Spring Faculty Academy on February 22, 2008, was an expanded continuation of the fall Faculty Academy. Professor Wlodkowski showed teaching strategies that are responsive to cultural differences and low income students. He also addressed how to use the previous experience and backgrounds of students to make learning more relevant and authentic and suggested the use of course syllabus as a tool to enhance student motivation for learning. Techniques were related to various course subjects and also math and science technique relevance were addressed.
Through the implementation of learned techniques at the DTI Faculty Academies, participating faculty have the opportunity to earn a stipend for application and implementation of methods to their course curriculum.
