CYBERSPACE MUSIC RESOURCES:
An Introduction to Online Resources for Music Research

Online Music and Videos:

Classical Insights:  Supported by N2K, a music entertainment company seeking to unite online technology with original music and entertainment content.  Selections include entries to the performance center, conservatory, hall of fame, newsstand, music store, or studio dedicated to Leonard Bernstein.  Each connects to a graphic and more links; among the more interesting innovations is the cybercast concerts available at the concert hall accessible though the "Performance Center."  After downloading the needed free software, one can listen to a full concert broadcast at a specific time.  Periodic announcements of upcoming concerts and a reminder of concert times, can be acquired by signing up on for their e-mail list.  Reactions to the concert are shared in the chat room.  The conservatory provides an introduction to music history for the novice, a glossary to help explain unfamiliar terms, and feature articles updated monthly.  The Hall of Fame is the place to learn about a famous composer's life and works (with linked lists of recommended recordings); a monthly update highlighting a featured performer.   As with many commercial web sites, however, there are far too many advertisements with animated graphics.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive:  Site of great interest for early jazz.  More than 1,000 significant recordings by the likes of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Duke Ellington, along with biographies and other information. Biographies are usually thumbnail sketches and dates are not always present.  However, the audio offerings are rich and ease of access to even individual tracks makes comparative listening possible.  The site is well linked internally and easily navigated.  Most of the basics are represented including Oliver's Gennett recordings, Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven tracks.  Rare items, oddities, and film are also represented.  Excellent source for jazz history and American Studies.
