CYBERSPACE MUSIC RESOURCES:
An Introduction to Online Resources for Music Research

Search Engines:

Note: Search engines are WWW navigational tools that allow you to search an index using keywords, and that provide search capabilities.  The WorldWideWeb (WWW or just `Web' for short) is a networked hypertext information system, originally devised at CERN in Geneva, but now in use all over the planet.  Search engines are web sites that offer URL listings based on keyword queries.  There are two types:

  • Spider-based Search Engine - gets its information from a software robot, also called a spider or crawler, that automaically visits and revisits web sties, and catalogues their contents
  • Directory-based Search Engine - gets its information from submissions
HotBot, Excite, and Lycos are emaples of spider-based search engines;  Yahoo is a directory-based search engine;  and Alta Vista and WebCrawler are examples of both spider-based and directory-based search engines.
