An Introduction to Online Resources for Music Research Search Engines: Note: Search engines are WWW navigational tools that allow you to search an index using keywords, and that provide search capabilities. The WorldWideWeb (WWW or just `Web' for short) is a networked hypertext information system, originally devised at CERN in Geneva, but now in use all over the planet. Search engines are web sites that offer URL listings based on keyword queries. There are two types:
Music
Resources on the Internet: Search Engines: (UCLA

with links, categorized in two areas: Guides and Lists and Search
Engines with Classified Music Lists.

URL’s for Specific Search Engines: most site listings are weighted toward pop music and the music industry, commercial and individual sites, as well as research and educational sites. Hyperlinks as well as URL's are herein provided. Alta
Vista: introduced by Digital Equipment Corp., in 1995;
one of the fastest spiders in the business today.
ComFind:
the Internet’s largest global business directory.
Cyber
411: a parallel meta-search engine with foreign language support.
Excite:
one of the top 5 major search engine; also supports a directory and
provides other information.
HotBot:
one of the most complete search engine and directories on the Internet;
provides a number of different navigational tools to facilitate efficient
research.
InfoSeek:
one of the top 5 search engines on the Web; one of the oldest.
Advanced features allow searches for specific sites, URL’s titles, or links.
Lycos:
offers a directory and search engine that also includes several regional
sites.
Netscape
Search: offers a directory by Excite and a search engine.
Netscape Search can be found within Netcenter, one of the leading Internet
portal sites on the Web.
Northern
Light: a search engine that provides custom search folders, premium
quality sources, and an integrated result list of Web and premium information.

Planet
Search: a directory fo business sites built by users;
expanding database through user-supported listings.
Pronet: the Internet’s original multilingual, searchable, international business directory; provides accurate and fast searches through corporate web sites worldwide. WebCrawler:
one of the top 10 search engines on the Internet; supports searching
channels.
WWWWorm:
search engine used to "index" the web (get URLs) and provide information
on a specific topic, systematically scanning the WWW and evaluating
each page according to a keyword search.
Yahoo!!:
acquired GeoCities, the definitive leader in personal publishing tools
and Web-based communities in 1999. The acquisition combines two of
the largest and most popular services on the Internet; powerful combination
enhances Yahoo!'s position as one of the world's leading global branded
Web networks.
The
YellowPages: the world’s largest index of free items of all types:
classified Ads, links, software, advertising, web pages.
