Language Initiatives

An important component of international business is the study of business language. Several initiatives are underway.
A foreign language track in Business Spanish was approved by the UCD Modern Languages Department and by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This was implemented in fall 2005.

An MA in Spanish with ancillary courses in Business has been approved by the CU Board of Regents. This program began in fall 2005.

The CU Regents approved a new licensure program that allows students to concurrently earn a French or Spanish degree and a secondary teaching licensure with a foreign language specialization.

Colorado CIBER provided a fall 2004 course revision grant to transform SPAN 3082 from a general translation course to one that incorporates a large segment of business translations and topics. This course is currently being offered to UCD students.

Colorado CIBER continues to build on the BS in Spanish for the Professions/MS in International Business program between CU-Boulder and UCD.
CIBER sponsored San Diego State’s business language consultant Steven Loughrin-Sacco to conduct an intensive two day seminar with the modern languages faculty at CU-Denver that touched on curricular enhancements that could expedite Denver’s language students’ completion of the MSIB program.

Colorado CIBER is a co-sponsor of the CIBER Business Language Conference which was held in Ohio in 2007 and will be held in Florida in 2008. Through a variety of workshops, papers, and a panel of business professionals, the 2008 CIBER Business Language Conference will address issues relevant to business language. The conference is a gathering place for business language professionals from around the nation to share experience and knowledge.
