July 5-9, 2008 – 2008 Annual PACIBER Conference
Held in Hanoi, Vietnam, the focus of the 2008 Annual PACIBER Conference is Internationalization of Business in Transitional Economies.  Attendees receive updates on current international business issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
Attended by 39 faculty members from leading business schools in North America, Asia and Oceania.
  
June 16-17, 2008 Global Security Conference
Second annual Global Security Conference in Washington, DC, hosted by the University of Maryland CIBER and co-sponsored by UCD CIBER.  Bringing together thought leaders, policy makers, scholars, corporate and government executives, and venture capitalists to examine security issues at both corporate and national levels, addressing some of the most important challenges and opportunities facing business and government today.
  • Global security, enterprise resilience, and international competitiveness
  • Opportunities arising from the 2008 Congressional appropriations for homeland security
  • Breaking through the barriers of government procedure and VC funding

June 11, 2008 Business Plan Competition

Hosted by the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship, the UCD CIBER co-sponsored the 7th Annual Business Plan Competition.  This competition encourages the creation of new businesses in Colorado and recognizes the most outstanding plans with cash and in-kind awards from area businesses. 

June 2-5, 2008 - Faculty Development in International Entrepreneurship

Learn important concepts and frameworks in international entrepreneurship with a focus on the intersection between the two disciplines of international business and entrepreneurship.  Obtain resources to incorporate into your classroom and network with colleagues who share similar interests in international entrepreneurship.  This program is for faculty members who wish to develop a course in international entrepreneurship, or to teach their IB course with an entrepreneurial perspective, or who are planning to conduct research in international entrepreneurship.

May 12-25, 2008 - Student Study Tour

This intensive field study, Windows on China, to Beijng, Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai provides business and liberal arts students with a general introduction to Chinese history and an overview of modern Chinese business, political and cultural environments. The course offers a combination of lectures and field trips. Students are briefed by US and Chinese scholars and journalists on various political, economic and business issues of China today; visit business operations to study US-China joint venture operations and other foreign investment companies; and visit cultural and historical sites to understand the framework of today’s China. Classes are held at the International College – Beijing at China Agriculture University. The required textbook is China: A New History, 2nd Edition, Harvard University Press, 2006 by John King Fairbank and Merle Goldman.  

May 10-27, 2008 - Africa: Understanding Africa and its Business Challenges

This faculty development program hosted by the University of South Carolina CIBER and co-sponsored by several CIBERs including UCD. Held in Kenya and South Africa. The target audience is business faculty and business professionals. The conference fee $6500 including travel costs from Atlanta.

May 10-20, 2008 - Business in a European Context

This faculty development program is hosted by the University of Memphis CIBER and co-sponsored by a few CIBERs including UCD. Held in Strasbourg, France. The target audience is Business, language and liberal arts faculty. The conference fee $2795 plus travel costs.

May 7, 2008 – Annual CIBER Advisory Council Meeting
This meeting was held at the new CIBER offices.  The agenda included sessions on academic partnerships; business partnerships; and highlights on China, business language, research, course development, Global Plus, MayMester, International Student Organization, and evaluation.

May 2-3, 2008 – Advanced Community College Institute

The Inaugural Advanced International Business Institute for Community College Faculty, hosted by Michigan State University at East Lansing, Michigan, and co-sponsored by UCD CIBER.  A study of globalization issues, international business, and world studies.  26 community college business faculty participated from 14 US states, Puerto Rico, and Ontario, Canada.  This is the only CIBER sponsored advanced level FDIB catering exclusively to business faculty at the nation’s two-year colleges.   

May 1, 2008 – Global Enterprise Institute

Co-hosted by KPMG LLP and UCD CIBER.  Focus on identifying and scoping opportunities and risks in international business for mid-market and entrepreneurial firms as they seek international expansion in response to a slowing US economy.  Topics include motivations for global expansion, implications of volatile currencies, and accounting and tax issues to be aware of.  

April 16, 2008 – International Executive Roundtable
Al Moffatt, President and CEO, Worldwide Partners, Inc., on the topic of International Marketing and Advertising.  Worldwide Partners Inc. is an international marketing communications network comprised of independent, privately held marketing communication companies that are shareholders and owners of Worldwide Partners, Inc.  WPI, headquartered in Denver, is comprised of 92 independent marketing agencies located in 151 offices in 51 countries with over 4200 employees.  Its $4.1 billion in capitalized billings make it the 9th largest overall marketing communications organization in the world.  It is a new breed, collaborative network focused on middle-market clients with customized structures and approaches for the specific advertising needs of each client. 

April 9-11, 2008 - CIBER Business Language Conference Preparing Global Business Leaders

The focus of the 2008 CIBER Business Language Conference is Preparing Global Business Leaders.  Attendees participate in an exchange of ideas and perspectives on how to most effectively train global leaders of the future, and how students and educators can be equipped with the linguistic, multi-cultural and managerial tools necessary for leadership in the 21st century. Held in St. Petersburg, Florida.

March 24, 2008 – Reynolds Distinguished Lecture in International Business hosted by the Center for International Business Education and Research and the Business School
His Excellency Le Cong Phung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United States of America, on the topic of Vietnam’s Emerging Economy.  Vietnam has emerged as one of the most dynamic economies in the world.  It has registered the second fastest growth rate in Asia during the past three years and has grown by an average of 7%-8% per year since 2000.   His Excellency Le Cong Phung was appointed by President Nguyen Minh Triet as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to the United States of America in October 2007. 
March 10-11, 2008 – Oil Price Volatility Conference

Hosted by the George Washington University CIBER and co-sponsored by the World Bank  and UCD and other CIBERs, this conference highlighted energy security, oil price volatility, economic impacts, financial management, risk management experiences, best practices, and future outlooks.  The dramatic rise in the price of oil from $10 to $100 per barrel in less than a decade has created tremendous wealth transfer, economic strains and security concerns.  The conference goal was to provide a forum for economists, policy makers and energy sector experts to participate in dialogue and share information and knowledge about oil price dynamics and risk management.
