After two weeks of required military training in all kinds of weather the new freshmen at China Agricultural University (CAU) were ready to start their college careers in earnest. Many have been studying hard for years to pass the tough national college entrance exams and were gearing up to study hard for another four years. Out of a wide sea of marching freshmen in brightly colored tee shirts, a different color for each college, 530 students in pastel blue shirts are enrolled in the prestigious International College of Beijing (ICB), an international program within the CAU system. Among the 530, 106 have chosen to study in the University of Colorado Denver program earning degrees in either Communications or Economics.
Hours before their final military parade performed for the University President these excited 106 ICB students participated in the opening ceremony of their program. The UCD Regent Patricia Hayes, Chancellor M. Roy Wilson, and Provost Mark Heckler, having just arrived in Beijing after a 15 hour flight, were refreshed and congratulatory while welcoming the new class of 2011. Dean Meng from ICB opened the ceremony with sage advice for the new college students. He was followed by Professor Archer who offered academic advice for their first year of study. Next, alumnus Ms. Wang Ning gave encouragement, and new student Ms. Zhang Xietang, who earned high marks in the national exam, gave her reflections on being a responsible student. The ceremony rounded out with inspiring and reassuring words from UDCHSC Chancellor Wilson and Provost Heckler. CAU President Chen ended the 2007 opening ceremony with his own invigorating speech.
The UDCHSC administration and the staff of the Office of International Education welcome the ICB students, the class of 2011. We are honored to have them studying with us.
