Denver election poll workers needed

(Sept. 22, 2008) The University of Colorado Denver is working closely with the City of Denver to strengthen our partnership. The City is currently in need of over 100 people to work as Poll Workers for the General Election on November 4th. This could be a win-win for our students, staff, faculty, the City of Denver, and the university.

A variety of $11.12 an hour temporary positions are available during the weeks leading up to the election, early voting days and election night. Late night and overnight shifts are also available on Election Day. Participants may earn a minimum of $120 as an Election Day poll worker with the potential of earning up to $210.

Applicants must be registered to vote in the City of Denver. (The deadline for registration is Oct. 6.) Bi-lingual (Spanish, Vietnamese and Russian speakers) are especially needed.

Those interested are encouraged to fill out the registration form specifically for UC Denver applicants.

Reminder to avoid purchasing problems

(Sept. 29, 2008) UC Denver’s Finance and Administration Office has been seeing an increase in the number of after-the-fact (ATF) purchase violations. An ATF is a purchase that exceeds $4,500 in which a purchase order has not been created by the PSC Purchasing Department. For example, authorizing a vendor to begin work before the Purchasing Department issues a purchase order, even though the department has submitted a purchase requisition, is considered an ATF. Similarly, obtaining goods or services on credit and subsequently submitting the invoice with a payment voucher is an ATF unless it is a purchase specifically allowed to be paid by payment voucher.

ATFs are serious violations and must go through a lengthy approval process starting in the Purchasing Department all the way to the State Controller’s Office downtown. You also will need approval from Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Jeff Parker. Plus, copies are sent to the Chancellor to notify him of the violation.

To avoid an ATF please refer to the purchasing rules on the PSC website at http://www.cusys.edu/psc/. Click on Policies to get a complete copy of the rules surrounding ATFs, Payment Vouchers, Standing Purchase Orders, and many other purchasing needs. If you are the key administrative person who does purchasing for your department it is important that you also make the faculty and staff in your department aware of these rules. Many ATFs are caused by faculty and staff simply being unaware that they don't have the authority to purchase services or items on behalf of their program without going through the proper purchasing process. If you need to make a purchase and are not sure how to avoid creating an ATF feel free to call the Finance & Procurement Help Desk at 303-315-2846 or Edith Butts at 303-315-2248.

UC Denver Visual Standards Guide now online

(Sept. 3, 2008) The University of Colorado Denver brand and identity has been the focus of a year of study and conversation leading to the conclusion that consistency in presentation and messaging will strengthen recognition of our university in the marketplace. By agreeing organizationally on a single look and feel for the presentation of our name and subunits (schools, colleges, etc.), we enable the public to differentiate this university from all others.

While UC Denver does not have a designed artistic mark, or logo, we can be consistent in the typography and color we use to present ourselves to the public. The UC Denver Visual Standards Guide offers simple rules on the signature, typography and hierarchy of our multilayered organization to the public. Please review the guide for current and future projects.

Forum set to discuss conflicts of interest policy

(Sept. 8, 2008) An open forum to discuss the newly implemented policy “Policy to Limit Conflicts of Interest Between Health Care Professionals and Industry Representatives” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 4 – 5 p.m. at the Nighthorse Campbell Native Health Building, Shore Family Forum on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The discussion is open to faculty, residents, fellows, students and industry representatives to discuss and provide guidance on the policy.

UC Denver recognizes that productive partnerships between academic health care professionals and industry representatives serve a vital purpose, facilitating drug discovery, technology transfer and the evidence-based use of drugs and medical devices for the benefit of patients. Further, UC Denver encourages and supports outside interactions of its faculty and student employees with federal, state and local governments and with business and industry, as important parts of their research, education and public service activities. To that end, UC Denver recognizes that such relationships can raise the possibilities of conflicts of interest.

In an effort to manage, mitigate and eliminate potential conflicts of interest, The University of Colorado Denver - Anschutz Medical Campus schools have adopted the aforementioned policy to govern and guide their interactions with pharmaceutical and medical device company representatives. The overriding objective is to maintain a critical, reflective and unbiased clinical care and learning environment for faculty and trainees alike.

Correct addressing standards for Anschutz

(Aug. 28, 2008) On the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) there is no longer one generic address that covers the entire campus. Each building has a unique address that is now recognized by the United States Post Office (USPS) as a valid address. In fact, the USPS now considers the use of both a street address and a PO number dual addressing and discourages using both.

Any stationary or literature that you currently have that uses both the PO number and the street address do not need to be replaced and will only affect how that mail is routed to the AMC.

Please use the following format for addressing your mail and begin to notify those who will be sending mail to you of the new addressing standard:

1)    Individual’s name

2)    Department name

3)    Mail stop - a correct mail stop is very important to ensure mail is routed correctly once it reaches the campus from the USPS. Carriers are not familiar with every name or department and rely solely on the campus box number to sort and deliver your mail.

4)    Building name - the building name is optional, if used it should come after the mail stop – not before. If space is a problem, the building name can come after the mail stop on the same line.

5)    Street address, room number - each building has their own unique address (see web site or pgs 39-47 of campus directory).  The room number comes after the street address and is critical for deliveries from Fed Ex and UPS.

6)    Aurora, CO  80045

Mail Center website: www.ucdhsc.edu/admin/budget/camps/mail/

The Mail Center has a customer service counter located on the 1st floor of Building 500 inside the Bookstore. The service counter is staffed from 7:30am-4 p.m. to answer any questions you may have, to purchase stamps, meter forms and all forms for Certified, Express, Insured and Delivery Confirmation.
