Freshman class acts to restore nature center

(Oct. 8, 2008)  UC Denver freshmen give new meaning to “Class Act.” Approximately 300 students from the fall 2008 freshman class dedicated the past four Saturday mornings to community service.

UC Denver's First-Year Seminar courses incorporate a service learning component as part of the university's goal to help students transition to college by providing hands-on learning in addition to traditional classroom experiences. The component also teaches the importance of community service.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, the final session, UC Denver students restored Denver's Bluff Lake Nature Center to its original short-grass prairie state through a Weed & Seed. Students worked to harvest plants native to the region, and removed the toxic vegetation. UC Denver student, faculty and staff volunteers directed the students.
