UC Denver’s PR team offers media training for all faculty and staff

(Jan. 5, 2008) Working with the media can be fun or frustrating, inviting or inconvenient. Understanding how the news media works is key to ensuring interactions with the media are fun and appealing, not frustrating or confusing. We also try to make them convenient. The Media and Public Relations team in UC Denver’s Office of Integrated University Communications is here to help you prepare for your print, broadcast and online interviews. UC Denver media specialists hold monthly media training sessions that offer tips on preparing for the interview with key messages followed by a “practice run” complete with a taped interview.

These small group workshops are designed to be fun and informative and are geared toward helping participants feel comfortable with most public speaking opportunities.  We also offer this training to groups of students who may be working on projects that are likely to generate media interest.

Workshops are held on both campuses, alternating every other month on the downtown campus and held monthly on the Anschutz Medical Campus (in the mornings and afternoons to better accommodate physician schedules). Departments, schools and colleges can also request special group sessions at times that work best.

Book a time to join a preset media training (dates follow below) or a group training for your department by contacting Tonya Ewers-Maikish, senior news media specialist, at 303.315.6374 or email tonya.ewers@ucdenver.edu.

“It was definitely beneficial for me to have gone through this training. A week after I had the media training, Channel 9 asked me to do an interview about job opportunities in the music industry in this economy—I don’t know that I would’ve done the interview prior to going through the training with the PR team. Knowing to have key messages prepared and rehearsed really eased any discomfort I would’ve had otherwise.”

- Storm Gloor, assistant professor, Music & Entertainment Industry Studies, College of Arts & Media

“I attended the training shortly after the Colorado School of Public Health opened. At the time we had several matters open to the press and were receiving a fair amount of coverage. The Media Relations team tailored the training material to cover this content. Together we addressed various scenarios and identified techniques for appropriately responding to challenging topics and questions. In my experience, the training was invaluable.”

- Lyndsey Crum, director of communications and external relations, Colorado School of Public Health
