Japanese Noh performers dazzle at King Center

(Feb. 18, 2009) A sold out performance of Noh, the oldest form of classic Japanese musical drama, was performed on Feb. 14 at the Auraria Campus King Center. Noh actors and musicians never rehearse together before they perform together.

Performed since the 14th century, NOH is the oldest major form of classic Japanese musical drama. Performance themes of NOH are taken from Japanese historical or classical literature and are choreographed through song and dance.

Each actor, musician and choral chanter practices his or her fundamental movements, songs and dances independently or under the tutelage of a senior member. The actors, musicians are brought together anew for the performance of the play. This ancient practice of not having joint rehearsals creates performance experience for the audience and the actors alike that exemplifies the traditional Japanese aesthetic of transience.

This traveling program is funded by the Japanese Government and organized through the Japan Foundation, UC Denver Department of Theatre, Film and Video Production and the College of Arts & Media.
