On an up note: AMC orchestra invites musicians to Melomania

(Sept. 11, 2008) Melomania wants you to play along. This UC Denver orchestra, based on the Anschutz Medical Campus, is encouraging the university community to dust off the old instruments – musical instruments that is – and come out to play every week.

Melomania, founded by clarinetist and pharmacy student Christina Yu in early 2004, is a musical outlet for students, staff, faculty and friends of UC Denver, explains Sonya Hultman orchestra president and a student at Anschutz Medical Campus. “Membership in Melomania is open to all instrumentalists, regardless of musical ability. We meet on Wednesday evenings, with the intention of presenting two concerts each year.”

Despite its all-inclusive nature, Melomania has attracted some pretty impressive credentials. In the fall of 2004 tapped David Brussel of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra as conductor. Brussel has played horn in the Colorado Symphony since 1982, and has been an active freelance ensemble player, soloist and recording artist with groups including the Boulder Brass, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, and the Central City Opera. Recent conducting engagements include performances with Opera Fort Collins, the Denver Opera Company, the Aurora Symphony, the Larimer Chorale, and the Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra.  He has taught extensively at the college/university level and is currently the artistic director of the Front Range Chamber Players.

Anyone interested in taking part, or taking a listen, is encouraged to contact Hultman at 303-917-6840 or Sonya.hultman@ucdenver.edu.
