UC Denver provides new improved Campus Emergency Notification System

Spring Semester 2009
The University of Colorado Denver, in partnership with the Auraria Higher Education Center, Metropolitan State College and Community College of Denver, is now offering a trustworthy and reliable text and voice messaging emergency notification service. It is very important for all students, faculty and staff to participate in this valuable service. It's simple to sign up. Just take a few minutes today to visit the Web site at: https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts.

Here's some additional information developed when this service first became available:

Frequently Asked Questions (Fall 2008)

Q) What is the Emergency Notification System (ENS)?
A) The Emergency Notification System (ENS) is comprised of a number of tools used to deliver critical information when the threat of imminent danger arises on or near any UC Denver location. One very important tool that individuals should register for is a text-voice messaging service delivered to individual mobile phones through an independent vendor--Rave.

This text-voice messaging service is available for all UC Denver students, faculty and staff. Students, faculty and staff should register immediately to receive emergency alerts delivered when threats of imminent danger arise at or near any UC Denver location -- including the Anschutz Medical Campus, Downtown Denver and 9th Avenue and Colorado Blvd. This new text-voice service is used in conjunction with other communication channels including public address announcements and campus-wide e-mail.

The university provides this valuable service through an independent vendor, Rave, in cooperation with the Auraria Higher Education Center and the other two institutions on the downtown Denver Auraria Campus. Rave also is the service used by the University of Colorado - Boulder and Colorado State University.

Q) How do I sign up?
A) Go to the vendor website: https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts
Please note: You will only be able to register for this service by using your University of Colorado Denver-issued e-mail address. Example: firstname.lastname@ucdenver.edu

INSTRUCTIONS: Go to https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts. You'll see a pink-colored button "Join now," click on that, then enter your UC Denver-issued e-mail address, create a password you'll remember. Then enter your information in the other fields that are required on that page.

If you experience difficulties completing your registration, contact the UC Denver Emergency Preparedness team at 303-724-4999 or emer@ucdenver.edu

Q) What if I don’t have a cell phone?
A) This Emergency Notification System is primarily a text messaging system through cell phone services, including cell phone voice messaging. If you do not have a cell phone (or a text-enabled cell phone), you may register using your home telephone number or other text devices.

UC Denver also will provide emergency updates as promptly as possible via e-mail messaging, online at www.ucdenver.edu/alert  and through recorded phone messages on 1-877-INFO-070 (1-877-463-6070).

Q) Can my parents or other family members also sign up so they’ll know what’s going on?
A) At this time, registration for the emergency notification service is only being offered to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Community College of Denver, and the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC).

Parents always can check for information at www.ucdenver.edu/alert or for recorded messages on 1-877-INFO-070 (1-877-463-6070).

Q) Is there a cost if I sign up?
A) The university is not charging students, faculty or staff for this service; however, depending on your agreement with your mobile phone provider, you may incur charges particularly if you opt to receive text messages. Please check with your provider to understand your charges.

Q) What kind of situations will this notification process be used for?
A) The university only will send you messages when circumstances arise posing a threat of imminent danger. Emergencies such as, but not limited to, fire, tornado, hazardous materials spill, or an act of violence. The system may be tested several times throughout the year to ensure effectiveness.

Q) Will this be used for weather-related closures?
A) This will only be used for weather-related emergencies if there is an imminent danger such as a flash flood or fire associated with storm conditions or a major blizzard with immediate impacts on the university’s normal business operations.

Q) How long will it take to get a message when something is happening?
A) It depends on the situation, but this system is designed to deliver essential information very quickly. The promptness of the service as tested by our emergency preparedness personnel was an important factor in the decision to contract with this vendor for this service.

Q) What do I do if I change my cell phone carrier?
A) If one of your phone numbers or e-mail addresses changes, you will need to log on to your personal account at https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts and update your information.

Q) Will my personal contact information be kept private by the university and the vendor?
A) Your information will be kept confidential and only used for the emergency notification process.

Q) Who do I contact if I’m signed up but didn’t get a message during a threatening situation?
A) Go to website https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts and double check that your personal information is correct. Then contact the Emergency Preparedness team at 303-724-4999 or emer@uchsc.edu

NOTICE:

UC Denver provides new improved Campus Emergency Notification System

(Sept. 30, 2008) Effective Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, the University of Colorado Denver, in partnership with our colleagues on the downtown Auraria Campus, will provide a new and improved tool for emergency notifications. We are now working with Rave Wireless to provide a new and improved emergency alert text and voice-message system capable of delivering messages directly to you should conditions develop on or near our locations that pose a threat of imminent danger.  We previously provided this service to you through a different vendor, 3n. We believe our new vendor --Rave Wireless-- is able to better address our service needs.

Our goal is ensure uninterrupted emergency notification capabilities to as many of our existing users as possible.  If you provided your mobile phone number previously in the 3n emergency notification system, that mobile number has been transferred to your Rave Alert account for text messaging and voice notifications.  If you have not provided your mobile phone number we will not be able to contact you until you visit the Rave Alert site and provide your contact details.

Note that your cellular phone provider may charge a per-text message fee for the delivery of emergency notifications to your cell phone. Therefore, we encourage you to log into your Rave account using the username and password provided in your personalized e-mail to confirm your contact information and choose your notification preferences.  Within Rave you may add additional email addresses, pager numbers, mobile numbers, and landline numbers for text and/or voice alerting.  The Rave Alert system can be accessed by all AHEC and UCD students, faculty and staff by visiting https://www.getrave.com/login/DenverAlerts. Please visit the site to update your password and confirm your contact information.

Remember, this service will only be used to notify you of an event that may cause death or serious injury in or around the University of Colorado Denver campuses. It will be tested on a quarterly basis using messages clearly marked as test messages.

If you have any concerns this service, please contact the UC Denver Emergency Preparedness office: 303-724-4999 or emer@ucdenver.edu
