IT Services launches pilot program to protect against data loss
(June 30, 2008) The security of sensitive electronic information is of critical significance for all academic institutions. The loss of sensitive information continues to occur at universities across the country with substantial consequences for both institutions and individuals. One of the common sources of data loss is lost or stolen mobile devices including laptop computers, smartphones, PDA’s, and external storage devices.
To help protect the university against the loss of sensitive information, IT Services has been charged with conducting a pilot project to investigate the feasibility of encrypting mobile devices that contain such data. The project will provide cost-estimates for the licensing, training, and manpower needed to encrypt mobile devices across campus while protecting a substantial number of these devices in the process.
The State of Colorado recently established a contract for a high-performance encryption solution at a low cost per license. The product, SafeGuard Easy Enterprise, allows for a managed encryption program with 7x24 password support. The pilot project will encrypt up to 500 laptop computers using this product.
During the next few months, IT Services will be contacting some of the departments that have been migrated to the new domain to enlist their participation in the pilot project. For the pilot, the licenses will be provided by IT Services at no charge. The mobile devices will be encrypted either by trained departmental LAN Administrators or by trained IT Services technicians.
If you have questions about this pilot project contact the IT Services Help Desk at 303-315-4357. If you have questions or concerns about data security or policies relating to data security, call the Office of Regulatory Compliance at 303-724-1010.

Submit your new business card order
(June 23, 2008) We have created a design for business cards and stationery that will bring a consistent look across the university. This interim design incorporates a portion of the University seal so that there is an interesting visual element to hold the place for our ultimate logo. To help answer questions you have, we have developed a set of frequently asked questions. Because this process has taken some unexpected turns and delays, many of you may have grown confused about our proper name and graphic identity. To clarify our identity for now,
Chancellor M. Roy Wilson, MD has agreed to pay for the first box of business cards for all university staff, physicians, faculty and student leaders. See what business cards will look like. The free boxes can be ordered until Sept. 1 through our internal printing services. The order can be placed online at www.uchsc.edu/printing/orderpage.htm or by phone at 303-724-6410.
Release of the new business card design coincides with a university-wide conversion and migration to new e-mail addresses. Each individual now may begin to use their new e-mail address, which is the same as their old address but with “ucdenver.edu” as the domain name. However, due to duplicate names that exist between the Downtown Campus and Anschutz Medical Campus, there are a few e-mail addresses that are not able to comply with this standard. In these cases, the naming standard for the duplicate name is firstname.middleinitial.lastname@ucdenver.edu. You can verify your new email address by visiting http://www.ucdhsc.edu/admin/its/NewEmailaddressInfo.htm and following the steps indicated. Macintosh/Entourage instructions are currently in the process of being developed.
The old address and new address will both be active during an 18-month transition, both feeding into the same mailbox. New business cards must carry the new ucdenver.edu e-mail address. The new business card design and related brand guidelines apply to the vast majority of the university community. However, there still are refinements to be made to accommodate particular centers and coalitions. The Creative Services team in Integrated University Communications will reach out to those specific groups in the coming weeks to discuss the timeline for developing your business cards and stationery.
We also have new designs for business stationery and a PowerPoint template available for your use.

Provost search committee candidate update
(May 23, 2008) UC Denver provost candidate Dr. Steven Hoch has accepted the position of Provost and Executive Vice President at Washington State
University.
His withdrawal from our Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic and
Student Affairs search requires that the search committee re-examine our next steps in the search process. Dr. Roderick Nairn, who completed his campus interviews earlier this week, remains a strong, viable candidate.
The search committee and Chancellor Wilson will meet as soon as possible
to consider our next steps.
Employee partnership ballots sent to classified staff
(May 22, 2008) In November 2007 the governor signed an executive order authorizing the formation of employee partnerships, as described in the attached FAQ document issued by the Associate Vice President for Human Resources. We were notified on May 20 that ballots were to be mailed May 21 to classified staff employees in all occupational groups except Professional Services and Financial Services. There are also a few employees who have been excluded from participation in the employee partnerships in the executive Order. Such employees at UC Denver have been individually notified and given instructions for appealing this decision if they wish. The university has not taken an official position concerning employee partnerships and strongly encourages all affected employees to participate in the election, so their views will be counted among other employees throughout state government.
