Gestational diabetes

(August 18, 2008) Research subjects are needed to participate in a diet study in women with gestational diabetes.

Participant requirements:

  • less than 30 weeks pregnant
  • recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes
  • between 18 and 40 years of age
  • in general good health

Patients will participate in two different diets for three days each, wearing a continuous blood sugar monitor during each diet. Compensation will be provided.

Exercise tolerance and Type 2 Diabetes

(July 2, 2008) This research study will explore how cardiovascular function affects the ability to exercise for people with Type 2 Diabetes as compared to non-diabetics.

Male or female participants must be:

  • In good health or with Type 2 Diabetes (controlled with diet and/or Metformin)
  • 30 to 55 years of age (women must be pre-menopausal)
  • Non-smoking
  • Exercise twice a week or less
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25-35 kg/m2. To determine BMI, visit http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

Participation includes:

  • physical exam
  • blood tests
  • electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • body composition measure
  • peak exercise testing
  • echocardiogram at rest and during exercise
  • Vitamin C infusion
  • 3 month exercise program
