Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorder

(Aug. 22, 2008) People who suffer from Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorder may be able to help with a Research Study of Taste and Monetary Reward and Brain Response. The study aims to examine reward learning and brain response/activation to taste and monetary reward learning tasks using fMRI technology.

We are looking for:

  • Females with Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorder
  • 16-45 years old
  • Without permanent metal implants in the body or metal braces/retainers
  • Who are right handed
  • Who are not pregnant

Participants will:

  • Complete a comprehensive psychiatric screening
  • Fill out self assessment questionnaires
  • Taste test various sugar solutions for their sweetness and pleasantness
  • Complete two tasks during a brain imaging scan
  1. While in the fMRI scanner, participants will receive small amounts of sweet or tasteless solutions through a mouthpiece
  2. They will also play a computer game where they try to figure out how to earn money Participants will be compensated for time and travel

Subjects needed for exercise metabolism research

(July 18, 2008) Participants are needed for a three-part, metabolism study investigating how fat stored in muscles affects insulin activity.

Participant requirements:

  • sedentary man or woman (women volunteers should not be using oral contraceptives)
  • 30-50 years of age
  • non-smoker
  • no history of hyperlipidemia
  • doctor has not advised against exercising

Two different preliminary assessments will measure:

  • body fat content
  • maximal exercise capacity (VO2max)
  • heart rhythm
  • resting metabolic rate
  • glucose tolerance
  • blood tests
  • health and physical examination performed by a physician

The third visit will be a metabolic study day, during which the following will occur:

  • 12-hour fast
  • infusion of naturally occurring tracer of carbohydrate and fat through an intravenous catheter
  • blood sampling from a catheter placed in a hand vein
  • 3 muscle biopsies
  • 1.5 hours of exercise at 45 percent of maximal capacity, before and after periods of rest

Diet will be controlled for 3 days before each study day. All three visits will be performed at the General Clinical Research Center. Compensation will be provided.
