Welcoming students and a new era
In about two weeks, more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students will converge on Campus Village to take their place in history as the first residential students at the Auraria Campus. Larry Loften, coordinator for student housing at UCDHSC, said more than 75 percent of the 685-bed apartment complex are leased—and the inquiries keep coming in. “We’re a little bit ahead of schedule,” he said. “Of course we’d like to have 100 percent occupancy, but 75-77 percent is good for a first year.” The Office of Student Life is encouraging faculty and staff to help make students’ transition to campus life a true celebration at Welcome Week. Although Loften recommends students wait for move-in until after the Denver Grand Prix (Aug. 9-13), many are eager to get settled. Volunteers are needed Aug. 11-15 to help as movers and greeters or by staffing the refreshment table. Welcome Week will continue with Rockies Night on Aug. 16, when Colorado plays the Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s a great way to connect with students, but tickets are limited, so those interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. A Chili Cook-off will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Campus Village, and the Office of Student Life is looking for entrants, judges and/or folks who just want to stop by and enjoy some hot food on a Thursday afternoon.
The week will conclude with Casino Night, 8 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Aug. 19 in The Tivoli. Sigi’s, on the first floor, will be converted into an alcohol-free casino with play money, gambling, prizes and a mocktail bar. Bartenders, dealers and attendees are needed. To sign up for any of these events, go to http://fs11.formsite.com/sorcforms/form419047472/index.html.
Jacks inspires students to take action Politics is not a game; it is responsibility that will map the future or our nation. Jerry Jacks, political science instructor, lives and teaches by this code. Jacks, this year’s Excellence in Teaching campus winner, doesn’t see politics as a bunch of stodgy, aging, self-serving politicos sitting in legislative chambers. (Departmental winners are Robert Hockenbury, Paul Musso, Kimberly Regier, Jean Scandlyn, Rick Sommerfeld and Stevie Townsend)
