Strategizing for an improved Web site
Ask anyone on campus what they think of the cudenver Web site, and you’re likely to get an earful. Everyone agrees it’s time for an improvement, but what form that improvement takes is open to debate. Now there’s a committee that is looking at Web issues and is strategizing on what and how to change.

At home, the forefront of civil rights

The First “Celebration of Civil Rights” honored women of wisdom, courage, action such as Brenda Allen, left, Peggy Burress, center, and Sonia Sanchez.

As we celebrate advances in civil rights, it is important to note that the continued and committed efforts of people who might not make headlines, but make a difference. The Office of Student Life and Black Student Services at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center downtown Denver campus honored three remarkable women at its inaugural Celebration of Civil Rights on Jan. 19 in the Tivoli.

Background checks and balances
Not to worry. Neither last week’s traffic ticket nor that busted party you were at when you were 18 will likely be a factor in being hired or promoted at the downtown Denver campus. The new background check policy isn’t concerned with minor offenses, says Betsy Rodriguez, assistant vice chancellor of human resources.

A happier new year for Denver's neediest
In the waning days of a year of cut-backs and catastrophes, the spirit of giving remained intact on the downtown Denver campus. At least three successful campaigns connected with UCDHSC gathered a cornucopia food, clothing and funds to help the less fortunate during and beyond the holiday season.

'Denver Bound' and determined
As the Denver Bound non-resident recruitment campaign enters its second year, organizers were pleased—if not wowed—by the results of the initial campaign. “
We increased the numbers of non-resident full-time undergraduates by 65, which was less than our original goal, but a good number for our first year efforts,” explains Barbara Edwards, director of admissions.

Promoting internships and experiential learning
In a recent national survey of employers, hiring managers said that the number one way they hired new graduates was through internship programs. The Career Center’s recent focus on increasing the scope and quality of internship opportunities has resulted in more than 550 postings for the spring semester alone.

Searches: Looking for outstanding leaders
When it comes to finding key leaders for the campus community, three important UCDHSC search committees report there’s plenty of opportunity. In addition to the search for the next UCDHSC chancellor, searches are also under way for deans in the College of Arts and Media (CAM) and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Bridge completion expected in March
The 50-year-old Lawrence Street bridge pier is gone and replaced with a new one.  In the upcoming weeks, the bridge deck, sidewalks, curbs and gutter pans will be completed. Concrete will be placed for the outer expansion joints at the end of this week. It is expected that pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be able to use the bridge beginning on March 1. This City and County of Denver project was initiated based on bridge infrastructure studies completed by downtown Denver campus civil engineering students under the direction of Associate Professor Kevin Rens of civil engineering. ~ by Marliee DeGoede
