Celebration marks Campus Village opening

Dignitaries including UCDHSC Chancellor M. Roy Wilson, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Byron Koste of the CU Real Estate Foundation gathered Aug. 9 to officially open the Campus Village residential facility just west of the Auraria Campus at Fourth and Walnut streets.

“This is a great day for the Auraria Campus, especially UCDHSC,” noted Wilson. “It is a win – win – win for students, the campus and the city. We all will benefit.”

Campus Village is a 685-bed facility open to students, staff and faculty of the three Auraria institutions of higher education. To date, it is at 75 percent of capacity. Nearly 300 of the residents are first-year students enrolled at UCDHSC, with more than three dozen graduate level students as well. Another 100 student residents are enrolled at Metro with the rest of the residents registered as Community College of Denver students.

Developer Sue Powers of Urban Ventures, who managed the construction project, welcomed guests to the festivities held in the outdoor patio area adjacent to the facilities’ food service area. She indicated that additional future development nearby may be possible.

“This is the result of getting the right people together,” said Mayor Hickenlooper. “It really kicks up the energy level and provides a more powerful attraction to potential students.” He also joked that if there had been similar facilities when he attended college, he might still be a student.

Touring guests got a first-hand look at amenities including full kitchens in many units, meeting space, state-of-the art laundry facilities and more.
