Berrenberg’s commitment goes back a long way

Joy Berrenberg knows the University of Colorado. She received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from the university and has continued as an integral member of its faculty, an involved colleague and volunteer.

Berrenberg began her university career as an instructor after receiving her PhD in 1982. Now as an associate professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, she has served in myriad ways for more than two decades. Berrenberg was interim associate vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs in 1997-98 and chaired the CLAS Bylaws Committee and the Educational Policies and Procedures Committee (EPPC), which recently completed the formidable task of drafting new CLAS graduation requirements.

Committee service includes the Undergraduate Research Awards Committee, the Sam Rose Scholarship & Nell Fahrion Award committees and the Tenure Review Committee.

Berrenberg is a member of Faculty Assembly and served as chair from 1994-1996. She was part of the Vision 2010 committee, Graduate Council, the Faculty Advisory Committee to AHEC, the Teaching Mentor Program, Library Review Committee, Udall Scholarship Committee and many others.

She juggles service with teaching six classes per academic year. “I believe that faculty service to the institution, particularly during the recent financial and political travails, is critical to our growth and survival,” Berrenberg says. “We must not be derelict in this important duty by shirking service or demeaning its value.”

For her exemplary service, Berrenberg was chosen the 2006 Excellence in Service recipient in her Department and CLAS.

“There is no other CLAS faculty member I can think of who better upholds the meaning of service,” writes Jill Hutchinson, assistant to the dean. “Her hard work and dedication are an example to all on the UCDHSC campus.”
