Convocation kicks off new year

Auraria’s Ninth Street Park provided a festive setting for UCD’s new student convocation on Friday, Aug. 18. Students who gathered for lunch were welcomed by Chancellor M. Roy Wilson. He pointed out that “a chancellor is largely invisible to most students.” But he encouraged those attending, who have now seen him, to speak to him when they see him on campus, “to let me know how you’re doing."

“We take it seriously, that you came here to UCD,” said Wilson. “The atmosphere here is much like a small liberal arts school because of our dedicated faculty, and we’re in a vibrant urban area,” he added, “making this the best of both worlds.”

Other speakers on the program included student government leader Colin Rose who noted that “what you take from here is what you make of it.” On a lighter note, Rose shared some observations from a student’s perspective on why it’s good to be a student: By the time you discover you’re missing something, it shows up at lost and found; if you want to keep your cell phone he advised, turn it off during classes; register to vote; and heed the warnings about where not to ride your skateboard on campus.

Additional words of wisdom were offered by Associate Dean from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Charles Ferguson. “See your advisors, don’t do what I did,” he advised. “You are here to become educated. Your job while you are here is to go out and contribute to the world.”

Following the program, students, faculty and staff enjoyed a cookout in the park.
