WEIHAUPT SHARES HARD, COLD THEORIES ON METEORIC EVENTS
 Recent data from a German satellite enabled UCDHSC geology professor John Weihaupt to link a meteoroid impact site in the Antarctic with tektites – rock debris and impact sites – in Australia.
Gravitational variances might not be enough to allow a person to walk on air, but their importance has scientists feeling light on their feet. Geology professor and former vice chancellor John Weihaupt and his colleagues have discovered and tracked a meteor site that is integral in determining the past, and that offers insights to possible futures of this planet. While the Wilkes Sub-glacial Basin in Antarctica has been a passion for Weihaupt for more than 40 years, new technology has enabled them to further explore and understand this find. NEARLY 700 GRADS CELEBRATE NEW BEGINNINGS As 2004 ended the downtown Denver campus celebrated as about 675 graduates saw their educational careers conclude and began the new year with a new vision and greater opportunities. Dottie has accepted the position of senior associate dean for administration and finance at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Doha, Qatar. Her final day at UCDHSC is Jan. 31.
- A reception to honor Mary Lou Fenili’s dedicated service to the Ombuds office will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, in the Lawrence Street Center in suite 360. All faculty, staff and students who would like to recognize Mary Lou’s nearly 16 years of service are welcome to attend the event, which will include light refreshments. Mary Lou will be turning over the ombuds mantel to a newly consolidated office to devote full-time to her role as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs.

- The third issue of the Copper Nickel, the English department’s bi-annual journal of poetry, art and essays, will be released Thursday, Feb. 17, at a 6 p.m. release party at the Walnut Foundry, 3200 Walnut St. The cost of the journal is $5 and will ensure the publication continues. - Nominations for the President's Faculty Excellence Award for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Technology are being sought. - The University of Colorado Staff Council (UCSC) is accepting nominations for its annual Service Excellence Award (SEA) for classified staff and professional exempt employees of the University. - The GLBTS Student Services continues to collect funds to help CCCD student Petrus Tobing return to his native Indonesia. Tobing lost most of his family in the Dec. 26 tsunami and is trying to get home to aid his orphaned cousin, Hamier. A
