Stephen Block, associate professor in residence at the Graduate School of Public Affairs, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Russia. Block, a faculty member at the University of Colorado Denver’s Downtown Denver Campus, will be examining the developmental issues of a young non-profit sector in Russia at Moscow State University of Management. Block will lecture on the management of non-governmental organizations and how government and non-governmental organizations can establish mutual goals and collaborations to address community needs.
“I felt honored by being selected a candidate and then stunned when I learned of being selected as a Fulbright Scholar grantee to Russia,” Block said. “I appreciate the scholarly recognition, but the real sense of honor comes from being selected to be part of a program that is committed to developing international understanding and promoting open communications between the United States and the countries that participate in the program.”
Block, who recently returned from lecturing in Portugal, applied for the Fulbright in August and learned of his award last month. “I have been pleased with the expressed expectations and the encouragement given to me by the U.S. Department of State to develop long-term cooperative relationships with the people I will meet and work with in Russia,” he said.
The Fulbright Scholarship was created in the aftermath of World War II through the efforts of Senator J. William Fulbright. The Fulbright Program promotes peace and understanding through educational exchange and is one of the most prestigious awards programs world-wide, operating in 144 countries and with 51 commissions.
