Dorothy Yates, interim assistant vice chancellor for research administration, received two awards from the Society of Research Administrators International (SRA). Yates received SRA Distinguished Faculty honors, meeting the following criteria:

  • Identify individual members who have contributed to the formation of the body of knowledge required by professional research administrators as they provide services to their institutions, to researchers, and to our societies;
  • Recognize the importance of a body of theoretical as well as practical knowledge for an individual to be a professional research administrator; and
  • Acknowledge individual SRA International members who are outstanding teachers, outstanding researchers or exemplar professionals in the field of research administration.

SRA International Distinguished Faculty will be called upon as leaders at annual and section meetings; as expert consultants or speakers to present professional workshops, continuing education courses, and professional development programs; as expert “faculty” to instruct for-credit educational courses or programs; and as expert researchers to conduct external, periodic and professional reviews of research administration capacity and process within organizations.

The organization celebrates the successes and achievements of members in many ways. In addition to being named distinguished faculty, Yates received the SRA International Awards in Research Administration: Hartford-Nicholson. The award was established to recognize SRA members who services have been of benefit to the entire society. Criteria for the honor are:

  • The nominee is a member of SRA;
  • The nominee shall have performed outstanding service to SRA over a number of years.

MITCH HANDELSMAN, UCDHSC Psychology, is the senior author of two articles that have appeared in the last month.  The first article is called "A Measure of Cellege Student Course Engagement," and was published in the January/February 2005 issue of the Journal of Educational Research.  The coauthors include Bill Briggs of UCDHSC Mathematics, Nora Sullivan, a recent graduate of UCD's graduate program in psychology, and Annette Towler, who was on the psychology faculty at UCDHSC.  The research described was supported by a UCD teaching enhancement grant to Handelsman and Briggs, and by the President's Teaching Scholars Program.

The second article is called "Training Ethical Psychologists: An Acculturation Model," and was published in the February 2005 issue of Professional Psychology: Research & Practice.  Handelsman describes this article as "the best idea I've had in my entire career.  But the bad news is that I've only had three ideas in my career."
