| Study Abroad Fair a Smorgasbord
of Overseas Education Options

The Office of International Education (OIE) knows the learning process reaches far, far beyond the classroom walls. The opportunities for a well-rounded education are as expansive as the Earth itself. The OIE recently held a Study Abroad Fair joining prospective study abroad students with organizations that can help them to achieve their goals.
Represented organizations included the Institute for the International Education of Students, the Peace Corps, International Studies Abroad and Cultural Experiences Abroad, to name a few. More than a hundred students checked out their options and the enjoyed the opportunity to speak to different programs to find a prospective fit.
Kim Hempstead, study abroad coordinator, tells a prospect, there is still time to apply for fall semester abroad. Typically, the deadlines for summer and fall terms is March 20; the winter and spring deadline is Oct. 1. Knowledge of a second language isn’t necessary, the OIE says, but if you’re interested in a certain language, full emersion is one of the best ways to learn.
Study abroad options include:
Travel Study: This earns UCDHSC credit abroad led by our faculty over a semester or short-term program.
Exchange: The student takes classes at a host university abroad but pays UCDHSC tuition and fees. Students earn credit for a pass or fail grade.
Independent: Students take courses through any study abroad program approved by UCDHSC and the student’s academic advisor. Transfer credit is earned in semester, year-long and short-term options.
While the Study Abroad Fair at the Tivoli Turnhalle is one method of bringing programs and students together, the OIE is always eager to help students find a program that fits their curricular and scouting needs, financial aid options and personal readiness.
