WHEN DISASTER STRIKES:
New Certificate Ensures Experts Ready to Respond
The devastation of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, the onslaught of Rita, flames leaping from beneath the landing gear of JetBlue A320 . . . every quiet moment on Earth is the calm before some storm. It’s not a matter of ‘if’; it’s a matter of ‘when and where’ disaster will hit. With the introduction of the Graduate Certificate Program in Emergency Management, Policy and Planning (EMPP), the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center is helping to ensure that when a crisis strikes, trained management-level professionals will be ready to respond. Light of a New Era at Undergraduate Symposium
The success of UCDHSC’s Downtown Denver Campus as it evolves over the next months and decades lies in its ability to reach the people it strives to serve: students. The new core curriculum, the honors program, student housing and a first-year experience program will launch in Fall 2006. The times are quickly changing on this campus, and The Undergraduate Experience: 2006 and Beyond seminar was one step in many to ensure the transitions are welcome and expected. (Full Story)

Giullian Bridges Gap Between Academic, Real World
One of the most prevalent concerns in education is the chasm between theory and practice. “I don’t think there has to be this gap,” says Sue Giullian, senior instructor in the School of Education and Human Development, “and I believe the students value and appreciate that belief.” Giullian has been a catalyst in bridging that chasm throughout a career that includes being a teacher and administrator at the elementary school level, and teaching student-teachers through the UCDHSC Downtown Denver Campus. OUTSTANDING
Cuellar Brings Joy, Enthusiasm Professionalism to Post
Laura Cuellar’s life is more than full, it’s overflowing. She’s a full-time program assistant in chemistry – responsible for accounting, budgeting, purchasing, human resources, payroll and “a lot of everything” for faculty, staff and students – a part-time student, Staff Council treasurer and chair of the Staff Recognition Committee for four years, a full-time mom and caregiver to her own mother. Yet Cuellar approaches her responsibilities with enthusiasm and joy. (Full Story)

Downtown Denver Campus Welcomes Marketing Director
Charlotte Million has joined the university staff as director of marketing communications. She and Danielle Zieg will lead the marketing and media communications of the Downtown Denver Campus. (Full Story)

Bard Center Honors Staubach
For the entrepreneur, patience is much more than a virtue, it’s the lifeline to success. Roger Staubach knows all about patience, both as a Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback and the founder and CEO of the Staubach Co. For his patience in the “pocket” and in the pocketbook, Staubach was awarded the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship’s inaugural Excellence in American Entrepreneurship Award on Sept. 22. (Full Story)

CU Solar Home En Route to Defend Title in D.C.
As part of their "low- to no-petroleum" pledge for the 2005 Solar Decathlon competition, University of Colorado students – both on the Downtown Denver and Boulder campuses – are in the process of transporting their solar home to Washington, D.C., using 100 percent biodiesel fuel made from vegetable oil.
