Talented high school scientists present posters at symposium

Chancellor Wilson welcomes Andrew Christ, left, and Ryan Tully, right, who are both seniors at Cherry Creek High School.  Their project focused on the development of a system to remove metal ions and magnesium chloride de-icing solution in Cherry Creek.

Some of the best and brightest local high school students who placed in the top tier of the senior division categories at the Denver Metropolitan Science and Engineering Fair (DMSEF) in February showcased their posters at the Research and Creative Activities Symposium on April 20.

For the DMSEF, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences sponsored the first, second, and third place senior division category awards and also provided volunteer faculty and advisors as judges. More than 270 middle and high school students from the Denver area competed at the fair in February.

As prospective students for UCD, the winners of the CLAS awards were invited by dean Jon Harbor to present their posters at the symposium and spend a day on campus. Prior to the poster exhibit, the students had lunch with CLAS professors and students to learn more about what they hope to study in college, as well as discover more about UCD.

Cherry Creek High School junior, Julia Buzan, presents her poster on testing the quality of violins.  She aspires to be a doctor, and accordingly plans to follow a pre-med track in college.

Young Kim, also a junior at Cherry Creek High School, presents his project on using chlorophyll as a sunscreen.  He wants to study genetics in college.

Daniel Smith, a junior at Herzl Community Day School, wants to study engineering and art; his research focused on automatic guitar composition.
