(June 5, 2009) This summer, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art features a newly redesigned entry space, brought to life by a collaboration between UC Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning Design Build Class and community supporters. The class project, taught by Senior Instructor and Associate Chair of Architecture Rick Sommerfeld and Architecture Lecturer Rob Pyatt, richly enhances the museum with major interior renovations that include a new entrance, museum store, reception desk and interior partitions.

For 10 years, the Design Build class has impacted broad-based community partnerships with non-profit organizations, translating architectural theory into practical application. The overall learning experience blends hands-on skills, design ingenuity and the use of innovative materials. It addresses issues of sustainability and incorporates salvaged and recycled materials as appropriate, including beetle kill pine and recycled steel. Natural light is showcased to reveal the entry space in varying ways throughout the day and over the course of the changing Colorado seasons. Through the college and community outreach efforts, vital support was gained from businesses and individuals.
