(July 24, 2009) Who would eat a cake with a series of hazard symbols on it?  Well, you would if you went to Environmental Health and Safety’s monthly meeting on July 22. UC Denver Staff Council, Human Resources, and Environmental Health and Safety honored Justin Sterger and Ben Jones as June and July’s Employees of Month, respectively.

Sterger and Jones are compliance auditors for the Environmental Health and Safety Department at the AMC.  They ensure the university passes audits and investigations of lab safety from various agencies.

Richard Benson from Human Resources Employee Relations presented the awards which were endorsed by Vice Chancellor Dick Traystman.

Both EHS Director Lou Mitchell and Manager Christina Aguilera had words of appreciation to say about Justin and Ben.

Jones and Sterger were honored for the positive attitudes, friendly demeanor and their willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

Recently, the men helped address compliance issues found during an inspection by a regulatory agency that oversees lab at the university.

“Justin has always illustrated a willingness to help others and demonstrate teamwork,” writes nominator Miranda Carbaugh of human resources. “Ben has an incredible work ethic and attitude and deserves recognition. Ben offers assistance to others in the department and works hard to understand the big picture.”

They also played an integral part in decommissioning the 9th Avenue campus. The duo ensured all tasks were done on time and mistake free. “They kept researchers, contractors, coworkers and everyone else well informed,” notes nominator Jerman Lopez of EHS.

Jones and Sterger are both pursuing their master’s degrees in environmental science on their own time to further excel in their positions at the university.
