Stop and Serve: Volunteering on the go on Auraria Campus

(Oct. 9, 2009) Most people want to help, really, but volunteering takes time and time is a precious commodity, especially if you’re a student juggling classes, family and work. The Experiential Learning Center has the answer. Stop and Serve, held monthly at the North Classroom Atrium, encourages students, faculty and staff to stop for just 5 minutes to help with myriad projects such as:

• Knit beanies and hats for newly-arrived immigrants in support of the African Community Center

• Make “no-sew” fleece blankets for distribution at the Children’s Hospital for Project Linus

• Decorate care packages for critically ill patients per Project Angel Heart The Oct. 8 event was held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and drew 37 students.

“Previously when asked, many students complained that they simply don’t have enough time to do community service projects. Stop and Serve was designed to address this complaint,” explained Eric Pianowski, Service Learning Coordinator. “This monthly event endeavors to plant the seed of community service in the minds of students here on the Auraria Campus. Participants take anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes to do a quick but meaningful community service activity.”
