No. Indicator Data Type Measure Best Practice in Place? Evaluative Statement for Best Practices or Data for Quantitative Measures Location of Policy/survey data/reports
1 Integrate teaching, research and service and connect the campus to the community Quan Number of students who have participated in programs that integrate research and service opportunities, i.e., cooperative education and internships, service learning and undergraduate research opportunities NA Sixty students performed community service as an option or requirement in service learning courses. Thirty-two students received UROP grants (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) and engaged in research under the guidance of a faculty sponsor; these students presented posters of their research at the November 1996 Research Day.

In 1996-97, 621 students were placed into internships through the Center for Internships and Cooperative Education; an estimated additional 200 students at CU-Denver participated in internships/field studies/practica through faculty arranged sites, i.e., education majors, graduate psychology and architecture students.

Annual reports prepared by Center for Internships and Cooperative Education, CU-Serves, UROP
Quan Measures of employer satisfaction with students in such programs, as appropriate and available NA About 350 employer evaluations of student interns were obtained in 1996-97; over 95% evaluated their student intern's performance as "outstanding" or "above average." Those employers not satisfied (less than 5%) are contacted by a Center for Internships coordinator and, occasionally, faculty sponsor in order to identify and correct performance problems. Employer evaluations are collected and maintained in the Center for Internships; for every student earning course credit for an internship the Center forwards a copy of the employer's evaluation to the faculty sponsor.
Quan Number of students involved in scholarly work (i.e., co-investigators on research grants) NA In 1997-98, 97 students were involved in work on faculty research projects. Office of Research Administration reports
BP Instructional programs involve students in research and service Yes The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and the annual CU-Denver Research Day give both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in research under the guidance of a faculty sponsor and to present their research in poster presentations to an audience of faculty, staff, alumni, students and guests from industry. Annual reports prepared by the Center for Internships and Cooperative Education, UROP
BP Structure retention, tenure and promotion criteria, faculty load assignments, course scheduling and other processes to support the integration of teaching, research and service Implementation is proceeding. Steps to redefine RTP criteria are being undertaken. Some schools (notably Education) have restructured teaching assignments to support this integration. BP Evaluate teaching, research and service regularly by multiple methods, including, but not limited to, student evaluation of teaching and primary unit evaluation of teaching, research and service Yes Teaching, research, and service are evaluated annually plus extensively for promotion and tenure using multiple indicators and sources. System functions well. Need to expand eval. of teaching. Faculty handbook, RTP guidelines, annual merit reviews, post tenure review policy
BP Provide opportunities for faculty to develop and improve their skills in teaching and research through teaching skills workshops, training seminars for teaching assistants, and grant-writing and research workshops Yes A variety of teaching and grant-writing workshops and training opportunities are available. Special mentorship program (YUMPS) exists to develop junior faculty. All are well received by faculty. Reports/program description from Office of Teaching Effectiveness, Office of Sponsored Research, Director of Faculty Development
