Bringing Children to Campus

Frequently Asked Questions

The new process will go into effect on July 1. All programs starting on or after that date are expected to follow the updated process and communication guidelines.

We recognize that implementation will take time as teams adjust. While we do not expect perfection immediately, we do expect consistent effort toward adopting and using the process beginning July 1.

All CU Denver departments, staff, affiliated programs, and unaffiliated (external) organizations that plan or implement programs involving minors on campus on or after July 1 are required to follow this process.

This applies to any program that brings minors to campus who are not under the direct supervision of a parent or legal guardian.

Both new and recurring programs are included.

    Internal Programs

Internal programs are run by CU Denver departments, units, or officially affiliated groups. These programs are managed by university staff and follow the internal Children on Campus process for planning, registration, and approval.

    External Programs (Unaffiliated Program Operators)

External programs are run by organizations not affiliated with CU Denver that wish to bring children to campus.

    External organizations must:

    • Partner with a CU Denver department or designated campus contact
    • Submit a Children on Campus registration form
    • Provide a full personnel roster (including all staff, volunteers, and contractors working with minors)
    • Complete required background checks for all personnel
    • Submit required documentation (e.g., certificate of insurance, protocol review confirmation)

A CU Denver campus contact must:

    • Serve as the liaison
    • Support the process and ensure requirements are met
    • Submit required attestations before approval

External programs are not approved until all requirements, documentation, and background checks are completed.

Yes. External organizations are required to work with a CU Denver department or designated campus contact before submitting their registration.

Programs submitted without a campus partner may experience delays or may not be approved.

Programs already underway before July 1 are not required to restart the process. However, teams are encouraged to begin incorporating elements of the new process where feasible to support a smoother transition.

Yes. We understand that adopting a new process takes time. There will be a transition period as teams build familiarity and consistency.

The expectation is steady progress toward full implementation—not immediate perfection.

    All programs must:

    • Be registered through the Children on Campus process
    • Ensure appropriate supervision and safety protocols
    • Verify that all individuals working with minors meet background check requirements
    • Follow university expectations for appropriate interactions with minors

Additional requirements may apply depending on whether the program is internal or external.

If you have questions or need support navigating the process, please reach out to your campus contact or the Children on Campus program team at youthprograms@ucdenver.edu.
